about

Wish You Were here was recorded during a one-year-plus-one-month-plus-one-day world concert tour from March 2015 through April 2016.

The instrument is Aalto, a single 99 Euro virtual synthesizer which is played via a standard gamepad typically used for computer games.

After playing hardware modular synthesizers since the 1970s, many of which were very large and expensive, the instrument I have created with this little plugin and gamepad allows me to actually PLAY a modular synthesizer in a musical way I have always dreamed of but never achieved. The key to the project is the way I map the gestures from the gamepad to the synthesizer, through a series of schemes that might be considered topographies of the synthesizer.

The recording includes parts of concerts performed in Malang and Surabaya (Indonesia), Lima (Peru), Montevideo (Uruguay), Beirut (Lebanon) and New York City.

Thirteen months on the road took me to the US, western and eastern Europe, the Middle East, China and Taiwan, Southeast Asia, South America, Central America, and Mexico. My travels relied on the support of many wonderful people, far too many to thank here by name. Here, for all of you, is an entirely insufficient THANK YOU.
